The Menopause and Depression Connection

Sherri Daniels asked:

There are all sorts of facts linking menopause and depression. It is a known fact that depression is one of the most important Signs Of Menopause and premenopause. Depression has been clinically and scientifically proven to effect women when they are approaching menopause. Clinical evidence suggests that depression in menopausal women is closely related to the hormonal changes in a women's body during their menopausal years.

As women, we are at a higher risk for depression in general, so when entering into the menopausal years, we are even more susceptible to depression. There are nearly twice the number of women that suffer from depression over men. There are many reasons that depression occurs so often during the menopausal years. For one, we are reaching the mid point of our lives and we know that menopause is approaching. All women know that menopause is approaching even before they begin premenopause. All women also know that the ability to conceive a child and to menstruate will be finished when it comes to that point in our lives. Middle age is just around the corner and honestly, middle age is one of the most dreaded and scariest times for a woman. One of the most horrific facts that a woman has to live with is the fact that they are not able to bear children anymore - bearing children is naturally bred into each and every woman. With that being taken away from us, and as we reach our middle age, depression is absolutely going to sink in deeper and deeper.

There are some people out there that do not want to take this serious. Naturally though, it is mostly people who would never have to go through menopause (a.k.a men) or the younger women who want to believe that menopause and middle age will skip them over. Most people think you are just sad and will snap out of it - they do not understand that it is beyond just being sad. Menopausal depression needs to be taken seriously and treated seriously for it is absolutely a serious matter and needs to be treated as so.

Hormones are the factors beyond all of this, depression included. If these hormones are not the direct cause than they are at least a contributing part and a catalyst, hormonal imbalances can do and cause depression after all. Menopause, as it appears seems to be one giant hormonal imbalance - and in many aspects that statement is true!

In your teenage years, before your first period you may have acted the same - up then down in your moods. Going through menopause is almost like going through that once again. One second you are happy-go-lucky, the next you are down in the dumps. Every bit of feeling was ultra sensitive and every single thing was a dramatic deal. As you go through menopause, your body will stop producing the hormone estrogen and the effects will be similar to the ones described here from your teenage years, only multiplied by one hundred.

Lastly, a lot of the signs of depression are identical to other signs of menopause itself. When both of them combine, the result can be terrible. One thing to remember is never take these feelings lightly or let them go untreated. Please trust that your feelings are legit and there are many people who will acknowledge that and will help you.
