Weight gain after ovariohysterectomy?
A previous answer to a question got me thinking.
When a woman (of the human variety) gets a hysterectomy, it has shown that they go through earlier menopause. One of the bigger complaints About Menopause is the weight gain.
Do you think that this can relate to dogs? That after an ovariohysterectomy, do dogs diets and exercise need to be CAREFULLY controlled, otherwise they WILL gain weight?
In which case, can't the weight gain be linked to the spay surgery?
What are your thoughts on this matter?
Kristin...there is a direct co relation between hormones and weight gain/loss. I have been arguing this here for years, but, the spay/neuter police want everyone to believe that the two are not related.
Loss of the hormone testosterone in a male dog or human makes physical conditioning hell to keep up, never mind what it does to growth, maturity, etc!
There is a reason why exogenous forms of both testosterone and estrogen exist and are prescribed by Drs.
Dogs do lose the same ability to process calories and the desire for certain things just as humans do after the removal of certain hormones.
