Stop Hot Flashes Once and For All
Deb Froehlich asked:
Menopause sweats or Hot Flashes are a frustrating symptom of menopause which affects an estimated 75% of women over age 50.
Even though menopause is a natural transition in life, hot flashes are disruptive and bothersome. If you're having an issue, you don't have to put up with it. The following game plan should spell relief.
Consult with your physician as your first plan of action so they can give you an official diagnosis and discuss your treatment options based on the description of the symptoms you're experiencing.
Evaluate the benefits and risks associated with hormone and drug therapies. Some of the popular remedies your doctor will present to you include: estrogen therapy, progesterone therapy and bio-identical hormone therapy. Your physician may also suggest the use of non-hormonal medications to reduce hot flashes like: gabapentin, clonidine which is typically used to treat high blood pressure and neurotin a medication approved for treating seizures and reducing pain associated with shingles.
Be aware of what you eat and drink. Caffeinated beverages, alcohol and hot and spicy foods can trigger hot flashes.
Stop smoking. Smoking is related to menopausal sweats. By not smoking you'll not only reduce hot flashes, but you'll also reduce your risks of many other diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Try to keep cool. Small increases in your body's core temperature can cause hot flashes. Open a window, dress in layers, use a fan or air conditioner or sip on a cold drink when you feel a hot flash coming on.
Include deep breathing into your daily routine by practicing deep paced respiration for 15 minutes twice daily or at the onset of a hot flash.
To begin this practice inhale deeply through your nose for 5 seconds filling up your belly with air and expanding your diaphragm, then exhale for 5 seconds as you pull your belly in and up. Repeat the in and out cycle until you feel relaxed and calm.
Consider alternative medicine dietary supplements. Compounds such as red clover, black cohosh, sarsaparilla, wild yam root and unicorn root may help.
However, be sure to use caution with all herbal supplements. Just because manufacturers claim their product it natural doesn't mean they are safe. Before taking any supplement discuss their usage with your physician as there are cautions when combining herbs with other medications or drugs.
Reduce stress in your day by practicing meditation, yoga or other calming techniques.
So get with your doctor as soon as possible and start adding some or all of these easy lifestyle changes and then sit back and watch the hot flashes go away for good.
