Menopause Hormone Pills

Side Effects Of Estrogen Pills

There has been a long-standing controversy of the potential side effects of taking estrogen pills.  Women who are taking the birth control pill and those who are receiving hormone replacement therapy are particularly interested in the latest research of the effects of estrogen.

Estrogen is a naturally occurring hormone.  Synthetic versions of estrogen have been used to prevent pregnancy or to relieve the symptoms associated with menopause.  Estrogen pills are also prescribed as part of treatment for certain types of cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Today's birth control pills contain lower levels of synthetic estrogen than the ones that first entered the market.

There are many documented side effects of estrogen therapy.  Long-term effects for postmenopausal women who receive long-term estrogen replacement therapy include an increased risk of endometrial cancer.  These women are also at higher risk of developing gall bladder disease.  Some animal studies have also found a link between taking estrogen pills for a long period and an increased risk of other forms of cancer, including cervical cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, and vaginal cancer.  In addition, taking estrogen while pregnant or nursing can also have a negative effect on a growing fetus or new infant.

Other side effects of estrogen can include breast enlargement or tenderness, swollen ankles or legs, water retention, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and changes in weight.  Women who receive the estrogen patch also report skin rash or irritation.

For these reasons, long-term estrogen therapy should be approached cautiously.  Most physicians will recommend taking a low-dose estrogen pill for only a short amount of time.
