Menopause Anxiety Symptoms

how long does it take for thyroid Medicine to leave the blood?

I was dianosed with hypothryoid about 6 months ago. I was taking levothyroxin (.25). Blood was still low so I had to take 1 extra pill on sundays to increase the dose. I am 54 yrs old and have also been expirencing what I thought to be menopausal syptoms-severe mood swings, anxiety, Hot Flashes ect. I called my doc and was told to go off the thyroid meds for 6 week and have my blood checked at that time. I just got a letter from my doc saying that my blood was fine. I called and asked if I needed to start taking the meds again and was told by the nurse that I didn't since my blood was fine. Now the nurse wants the doc to evaluate my symptoms to determine if it is menopause. I asked, " am I hypo or aren't I?" The nurse said that maybe the levothroxin is still in my blood. I find this hard to believe after 6 weeks of being off the med. Am I missing something here?

No the medicine is NOT still in your blood after 6 weeks, if it had a half life that long the drug company's would go out of business!!! Sounds to me like you are either experiencing medication induced hyperthyroidism which is boosting your metabolism and thus causing your side effects or the more likely event that you are indeed going through the menopause which mimicks this and is messing with your endocrine system. You can still have hypothyroidism thats being masked by the menopause. My recommendation to you is to just go to your GP (Dr.) and ask for a hormone profile to be done, this will give you conclusive evidence of both your thyroid and menopausal states - go from there, anything else is just speculation.
