Menopause And Hot Flashes Treatment

have been diagnosed with graves disease, what are results from meds?

I am gaining weight, have Hot Flashes (although I thought the hot flashes were from menopause) foggy headed, rapid heartbeat, hard to swallow at times, hungry alot. Has anybody out there had the radioactive iodine treatments? And is it true that you can't be near anybody for 6 weeks?

I have Graves Disease. Your doctor may try to put you on a pill that is a thyroid inhibitor that will lower your thyroid levels. This will make you feel much better. I had a bad reaction from the medicine so I had the radioiodine. You drink about a tablespoon of it and it's painless. Afterwords I was told that for 5 days not to be within an arms length of someone for more than twenty minutes at a time. Also was told not to hold small children, sleep next to someone, share towels, and had to pour some liquid that they gave me in the toilet before flushing. The reason for this is that your body is releasing some of the radiation which can put others at small risk of getting thyroid cancer. If you don't have small children it is actually easy to do. It sounds scary but they actually have been doing this for many years and it ends up that it is quite safe. The other option is surgery to remove the thyroid. If you have the surgery or do the radioiodine you'll probably end up with low thyroid levels and have to take one pill a day to bring the amount of thyroid hormones up to normal. Please talk to your doctor about what he recomends for you.
