Dhea Menopause
Low progesterone and testosterone in women?
Okay I am 29 years old and have 2 kids (1 & 4) My husband and I went to the Dr for help to lose weight. When the Dr asked a few questions about me on habits and motivation she said she thought I might be heading or in menopause. I was given a saliva test to take home and mail in. The results were very low levels of progesterone & testosterone. I admit I have thought I was having a mild depression issue since the birth of my son last year, since I can't lose the weight.
Am I too young for these problems? It makes sense on stubborn weight issues, but will I have these problems from here on out?
When I got the Rx's I received progesterone and dhea pills and testosterone cream to use on my wrists. I was unsure about these cause they are compounded drugs so there was no info.
Do I get a second opinion? What could cause these hormone problems?
Well I had a hysterectomy last year so I don't have any more cycles. It was not related to this.
And I haven't breastfed in 6 months.
I'd DEFINITELY get a second opinion. The doc is wacky to think, without testing, that you're in menopause or heading into menopause at 39. first of all that's really uncommon at your age, and second, the only way to diagnose that is by testing your FSH level (which would be a blood test, and it doesn't sound like she did that).
There's a contingent who thinks saliva tests are accurate, but most doctors think they aren't--you get very different results via saliva than via blood. Did they take into account what time in your monthly cycle you were when the test was done? Because it changes throughout the month. This same contingent tends to think all women are low in progesterone, so it's no surprise there that that's what this doctor found. If docs find the same thing for all patients, it's because they're not really examining them properly.
Are you still breastfeeding? That affects your hormones if so.
I would get a second opinion, just to see what the other doctor has to say.
